Frankenstein Alive, Alive # 1 - Steve Niles & Bernie Wrightson

When I was 11 or 12 years old I snuck out of my school library a collected edition of Bernie Wrightson’s Freakshow. I had been reading horror stories for a couple years, but this was the first comics that actually scared me. There was something unique about human deformity and ugliness, and the way Wrightson would portray such a motley crew of misfits. Monsters can be heterogeneous, and that’s what Bruce Jones and Bernie Wrightson had in mind when they produced one of the best horror classics of the American comic book industry. In a similar venue, that’s exactly what Tod Browning tried to communicate to us when he directed Freaks in 1932, which is already a classic of the American film industry.

So it’s all about classics here, and what greater classic of fantastic literature than Mary W Shelley’s Frankenstein? Bernie Wrightson had already adapted the novel a couple of decades ago, and now with the help of writer Steve Niles, he revisits a character that has been immortalized in movies and even TV shows. “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” was a novel written in the 19th century. At the end of the book, the monster created by Victor Frankenstein is ridden by guilt. After the demise of his creator, the monster feels compelled to find his own death and vanishes into the North Pole.

This is the starting point for Frankenstein Alive, Alive. Here, the monster has already tried to freeze to death to no avail. Committing suicide is not easy for an unnatural creature such as himself. Eventually, he ends up in a circus, he’s part of the freak show and is displayed alongside bearded women, hydrocephalic men, genetically deformed people, horrors of nature that are now part of a show for civilized people. The scenario is very similar to the one we’ve seen in Wrightson’s Freakshow or Browning’s Freaks, although here Frankenstein is more horrible and repulsive than any of the other freaks.
The freakshow / el espectáculo de los fenómenos
Frankenstein is like Borges’s Minotaur in “The House of Asterion”, he’s well aware of the hatred directed towards him, he’s human enough to suffer as an outcast but at the same time his monstrosity prevents him from dying: “My very appearance in any town or village provoked such agitation, fear, and hostility that I was quickly run out of town. I had done nothing. Their fear was solely based on my appearance”.
Frankenstein in the circus / Frankenstein en el circo
This is not a story about humans chasing down a monster, this is a story about a monster who considers himself human although his physiognomy is evidence of the contrary. IDW has had the brilliant idea of publishing this miniseries in glorious black and white. We can appreciate every artistic detail in this edition. Wrightson uses pencils, brushes and nibs and Chinese ink. The result is of such a captivating beauty that one can’t stop thinking about masters such as Goya or Rembrandt.

the modern Prometheus / el Prometeo moderno

No había hecho nada.

Supercrooks # 3 - Mark Millar

The Robin Hood fantasy has been present in our minds since, well, medieval times. Mark Millar twists this concept a bit with a story about a group of washed-up criminals that are attempting to steal from the greatest super-villain in history, a man that has a fortune of over 800 million dollars, more than enough for them to live the rest of their lives very comfortably.

Johnny Bolt and his retired colleagues are now in Spain, a country without super-heroes, they are hard at work planning the biggest heist of all times. But aren’t they turning their back to the idealistic Robin Hood approach? Of course they are, because this is a blatant return to capitalist values under the popular notion of "work hard"… because if we all work hard we could all be millionaires one day. Like Slavoj Žižek explained about Thatcherism in Great Britain, the illusion of getting rich is stronger than reality. The Thatcherist dream was quite simple, hard work guarantees success. This is obviously an illusion because only a few men might get rich whereas the majority of them won't. But that doesn’t matter as long as everyone identifies with this discourse.

Once the plan is set into motion Johnny Bolt tells his comrades to start imagining what they will do with the millions they will steal. It’s all about fantasy, about the illusion of getting rich instead of the harsh reality. To identify with the possibility of living as millionaires for the rest of their lives is enough: “The possibility of satisfaction already functions in itself as actual satisfaction”.

And doesn’t the same thing happen to us whenever we buy a lottery ticket? Isn’t the possibility of satisfaction enough for us in the end? Johnny Bolt and his team will have to answer those questions, but what they don’t know is that the man they’re trying to rob is onto them. And the final showdown could be deadly.
__________________________________________________________________

my drawing step by step / mi dibujo paso a paso

my inks / mis tintas

In May I picked Morning Glories # 18 as the best issue of the month. Now this time it’s a tie between Hit-Girl # 1 and Astonishing X-Men # 51. Hit-Girl was really great and I’ll write a full review on this first issue in due time. Astonishing X-Men, on the other hand, was a wonderful surprise. I had never read anything by Marjorie Liu and I absolutely loved her story. The fears and insecurities of Northstar as his wedding day approaches are intense and honest. Discrimination is also made evident as even some of the X-Men refuse to attend this gay wedding. Issue # 51 made me remember everything that I love about X-Men, as well as the whole concept of mutants, prejudice and heroism. Fantastic issue! Hypernaturals # 1 and Extermination # 1 were quite impressive, I’d really like to read more of these titles. The Boys # 67 and Unwritten # 38 were very good too. Finally, I really enjoyed the conclusion of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Century 2009, it has some amazing moments, like the one in which Mina and Orlando are walking down the streets and Mina says that she was used to poverty and hunger in the Victorian age but what she sees now is something else... people in 2009 feel kike there is no point to anything. And then Orlando says that's what happens when culture becomes irrelevant. That moment right there is just brilliant. I won’t say more because I’m always against spoilers, but let’s just say that I had a lot of fun with June’s comics. And now, without further ado, last month’s list:

____________________________________________________________________________________

The Boys # 67 y Unwritten # 38 estuvieron muy buenos.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #51

Borstal Boy (2000)
Directed by Peter Sheridan

Brendan Behan is a young Irish that understands the consequences of his actions when it's too late. Carrying explosives for the IRA, Brendan is apprehended during the first sequences of Peter Sheridan's film.

Here there is clearly a disruption between the boy's wishes and his actions. For undisclosed reasons he has perpetrated a most dire action against the integrity of the United Kingdom. Or he has had such a purpose, anyway. How far can one go when insurgence seems to be the only way out? In a troubled time, in a troubled Ireland, Brendan Behan risks everything and he fails.

He is arrested and sent to Borstal, to become yet another Borstal boy in a most peculiar penitentiary facility. Deprived of his liberty, he treats Charlie Milwall with hostility, although later he will develop an intense friendship with this young inmate.
Estupenda edición de Polifonía

Behan is blinded by ideology. After all ideology is nothing more than a social construction which pertains many ambits of society. One could talk about the heterosexual normative as an ideology so strongly rooted that seems impossible to vanquish. In this case, the most obvious ideological weight comes from the ties Brendan has with the Irish Republic Army.

Authors as diverse as Daniel Bell and Albert Camus have written about the end of ideologies. Ideology can blind people and will always be influential in the way they see the world, regardless of the positive or negative outcome of this process, ideology is a perception of the world that leaves as strong a mark as one's own body or personal history. It's then logical that Brendan struggles to be faithful to the IRA's ideology failing over and over again.

Ideology also blinds Brendan when it comes to his true feelings. He tries to convince himself that he loves the warden's daughter. That is why at first he angrily repels Charlie's harmless advances. But then, very slowly, he starts to give in. They share one precious intimate moment before some prisoners attempt to abuse the warden's daughter. As a result Brendan has mere seconds to decide who he should protect. Must he embrace the norm, id est, heterosexuality or could he accept the forbidden, id est, homosexuality? Once again he denies his true self, and in doing so, he forever condemns Charlie to oblivion. Just as in the beginning of the film, Brendan will fully understand the consequence of his decision only when it's too late to change it. When he realizes there is nothing left to do, he truly opens his eyes. Ideology has fallen apart: his allegiance to the IRA is over, as well as his relationship with the warden's daughter. Brendan is at last, literally and metaphorically, free.

my inks / mis tintas
