Michael Zulli

I’m having a lot of fun reading all the news about ‘the’ Comic-Con. Although I’m not sure fun is the right word to be using. After all, I have no interest in DC Comics and that, right there, eliminates practically half of the news, and Marvel’s announcements have been, to say it kindly, underwhelming. I am however very interested in everything that’s coming from the rest of the publishers. There was a day in which I would have never ventured outside the big two’s ‘comfort zone’, but the creative decline in DC forced me to abandon the land of Superman and embrace Marvel more than ever before, at least for a few years. Right now the best titles are either creator owned or come from indy imprints (Mark Millar's Millarworld, Icon, Avatar, IDW, Dynamite, Top Shelf, Image, etc.). That is my opinion but, of course, I’m willing to concede that I could be wrong. What do you think?


San Diego Comic-Con stopped focusing exclusively on comic books some time ago, and now it’s more of a pop culture event, with Hollywood movies, online gaming and many other related products. Still, Eidolon Fine Arts will be presenting Michael Zulli’s most personal graphic novel to date: The Fracture of the Universal Boy, a book made possible by a successful Kickstarter campaign. Hundreds of people made generous donations, including myself.

Estuve un par de horas en la decimosexta feria del libro de Lima, y me satisfizo encontrar una buena variedad no solamente de libros sino de cómics. Parece que en los últimos años las librerías y distribuidoras se han esforzado. Ha habido épocas en las que no encontraba absolutamente ningún cómic. Lo cierto es que a pesar de los buenos precios de hoy, sigue siendo sustancialmente más barato para mí seguir comprando todo en internet, en páginas como DCBS (que ofrece excelentes descuentos) o My Comic Shop, con un catálogo de literalmente centenares de miles de cómics distintos. Fue muy divertido encontrarme con Gabriela Ibáñez, que justamente organizaba un evento de su editorial Polifonía.

Por estos días se realiza la San Diego Comic-Con, el más grande evento de cultura pop del mundo, que en el pasado solía ser exclusivamente de cómics y en la actualidad incluye juegos de computadora y películas de temática fantástica o de ciencia ficción, entre muchas otras cosas. Allí Eidolon Fine Arts presentará la edición de la novela gráfica más personal de Michael Zulli: THE FRACTURE OF THE UNIVERSAL BOY, publicación que se hizo posible gracias a una exitosa campaña en Kickstarter, y a las generosas donaciones de cientos de interesados, entre ellos yo.

I have a confession to make: until yesterday I had never read a page of EL ETERNAUTA, a fundamental Hispano-American graphic novel. Why? Simply because it had happened to me, more than once, to stumble upon some ancient ‘treasure’, some classic comic book that although had relevance a couple of decades ago would result disappointing for me in the present. I won’t come up with examples, as I think comparison is often a heinous activity.


Published weekly in the late 50s -in black and white- in chapters of three or four pages, EL ETERNAUTA was written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and drawn by Francisco Solano López.


I think we are all familiar with 2000AD, a British anthology that to this day still preserves the anthological model. I grew up reading some of the early works of Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, John Wagner, etc. I guess that’s why it took me a while to get into the American comic books market; after all, I wasn’t used to the 22 page format, I was only familiar with 6 page stories. I admire those British authors, able to tell a deeply emotional story and build original and relatable characters without needing an entire issue to do so. However, Oesterheld accomplishes that with only three pages. How’s that for genius?

Most scripts manage to create some sort of cliffhanger after 22 pages; to do the same with half of those pages is quite tricky. But to achieve it with even less is truly commendable.

EL ETERNAUTA begins with a worldwide catastrophe, however the protagonist focuses only in his immediate surroundings. This is the local point of view of something that is affecting every human being on Earth. Paint your village and you will paint the world, explained Tolstoi once. And he was right, if you get deep enough inside your characters motivation, inside the reality and situations you have created for them, the only possible outcome is a depiction of the human condition, and that is of a universal nature.


Oesterheld is universal from the very beginning. When I was about to open the book, I calculated it would take me three days to finish it. Turns out I devoured almost 400 pages in less than a day. I simply couldn’t stop reading. I needed to know what would happen next, I had this urge to turn the page and keep on reading. What an experience! It’s been years since I have so avidly read a graphic novel or any kind of book for that matter.

And what an amazing artist! In an era with no computer, no Photoshop, he would produce top notch work and always on time. Some of his compositions are simply breathtakingly beautiful.

El Eternauta

I could spoil the story or overanalyze it. But that could hardly be the right course of action. Those who have read it can share my enthusiasm, and those who haven’t read it are more than welcome to look for it. Nonetheless I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that my opinion is only mine, and with this graphic novel, it is important to remember that one single man is not enough. In the words of Oesterheld “the only valid hero is the hero ‘in group’, never the individual hero, the lonely hero”.

Debo confesar algo, hasta el día de ayer jamás había leído ni una sola página de El Eternauta, ese cómic prácticamente fundacional de la narrativa gráfica latinoamericana. ¿Por qué? Simplemente porque me ha sucedido más de una vez, al leer una obra publicada décadas atrás, que si bien podía entender el valor que debió tener en un momento dado, en un contexto determinado, terminaba por decepcionarme en la actualidad. No voy a citar ejemplos, porque las comparaciones siempre me han parecido odiosas.


El Eternauta es la conocida obra del brillante guionista Héctor Germán Oesterheld y del extraordinario artista Francisco Solano López, publicada originalmente bajo un esquema semanal a fines de la década del 50, cada entrega constaba en promedio de tres o cuatro páginas, siempre en blanco y negro, en donde se iba desarrollando una historia cargada de humanidad, peripecias y desenlaces inesperados.


Pasé buena parte de mi infancia leyendo cómics de 2000AD (Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, John Wagner, etc.), una publicación semanal británica, que hasta el día de hoy mantiene el formato antológico. Acostumbrado a narraciones de seis páginas, el estilo del comic book norteamericano tardó un poco en calar en mis gustos. Después de todo, 22 páginas de una sola historia a veces ocultaban la impericia del escritor de turno en tal o cual título súper-heroico.


He admirado siempre a los británicos por esa capacidad magnífica de contar una historia capaz de emocionarnos y hacernos sentir conectados con los personajes en poco espacio. Con una menor cantidad de páginas, Oesterheld logra mucho más que eso.


Los norteamericanos tienen el término de “cliffhanger”, que no es otra cosa que el suspenso que preceda al famoso “…continuará”, al término de una aventura. Lograr ese suspenso después de 22 páginas para muchos puede ser pan comido, lograrlo luego de una decena de páginas es ya bastante complicado, pero conseguirlo con tan sólo tres páginas es digno de elogio.

La historia empieza con una catástrofe a nivel global, aunque el narrador se centre en su entorno inmediato. Sin embargo, la fuerza del relato reside justamente en eso: en la localidad. Pinta tu aldea y pintarás el mundo, afirmaba Tolstoi. Y esto implica, en efecto, meterte en el pellejo de tus personajes y en la realidad que te rodea a tal punto que, al describirla, termines describiendo algo que refleje la condición humana y que sea, por ende, universal.


Oesterheld alcanza ese grado universal desde un inicio. Recuerdo haber empezado a leer la cuidada edición de RM pensando que en tres días daría buena cuenta de las casi 400 páginas que componen este libro. Empecé y ya no lo pude dejar. Tuve que leer todo de un solo tirón. Hacía años, realmente años, que no experimentaba esa necesidad apremiante de saber qué pasaría en la siguiente página. Los constantes “continuará” no hacía sino incrementar mi entusiasmo por la lectura.

Y qué maravilla de arte. Solano López… casi puedo verlo en una época sin computadoras, sin photoshop, a punta de lápiz y tinta china, cumpliendo con puntualidad absoluta y dándose al mismo tiempo el respiro necesario para elaborar algunas composiciones realmente magistrales.


Podría desgranar la historia, analizar mis partes favoritas, pero no creo que haga falta. Los que la han leído saben de qué hablo; los que no, quedan invitados a leerla. Pero en todo caso, y a diferencia de otras veces, aquí sí es pertinente señalar que mi opinión sería mía, únicamente mía, y que para seguir el lema del propio HG Oesterheld: “el único héroe válido es el héroe en grupo, nunca el héroe individual, el héroe solo”.  

1602 - Neil Gaiman & Andy Kubert

Originally published in 2003, Neil Gaiman’s 1602 has some of the best Andy Kubert’s illustrations in a long time as well as gorgeous covers by Scott McKowen. 1602 is full of details that enhance the reading experience: the last names of many of the characters are based on real francophone linguistic influences (EG instead of Peter Parker we have Peter Parquagh); the frequent use of songs, such as the ballad that narrates the fate of the Fantastick vessel and his four occupants, exemplifies common 17th century cultural praxis. Also, as many Shakespeare scholars know, men disguised as women -or women disguised as men- was quite a common tendency, and not only in Elizabethan theatre (that’s why it shouldn’t come as a shock that Jean Grey poses as ‘John’ Grey).

As can be attested in Sandman, Gaiman is an expert in Shakespeare’s era. In 1602 he uses all that historical knowledge to strengthen his story and the world he creates. It’s fascinating to observe, for example, how velocity can be the greatest asset for the Grand Inquisitor (Magneto). Effectively, sending a message from one country to another could take several days, and so a man able to run thousands of miles per hour (Quiksilver) suddenly becomes the most irreplaceable member of Magneto’s brotherhood.

Fantastic Four

Velocity is what Javier and his witchbreed need in order to seize Doom’s castle on time. Count Otto Von Doom has imprisoned the Four from the Fantastick (Sir Richard Reed, Captain Benjamin Grimm, John Storm and Susan Storm). In this reality, Doom is also known as the Handsome, and indulging in unabashed exhibitionism he has no problem in maintaining sexual intercourse in front of the Invisible Woman (who is perpetually invisible and trapped in a glass casket). Doom has devised refined punishment methods for Richard Reed and his companions, but none can rival the perverse scenario in which the gaze of the other (in this case, an ‘unseen’ other: Susan Storm) sustains his sexual prowess.

With the inquisition in Spain and King James’ bigotry in England, there seems to be no place for the witchbreed in Europe. That’s why Javier and his disciples flee to the New Continent, to America, aided by the Four from the Fantastick, the Norse god of Thunder and Rojhaz, who is in fact Steve Rogers –Captain America- an unwilling time-traveller. His presence, nevertheless, has created a rift in time that must be solved by Richard Reed if the world is to survive.

Cyclops, Angel & Fury

Unlike previous Gaiman’s works, this is mostly adventure. Action and touching moments are carefully paired with original ideas and the vibrant reimagining of classic Marvel universe heroes. I had the chance to read this miniseries a few years after the original release date, and even though I had been ‘spoiled’ online, I still enjoyed it tremendously.

Publicada originalmente en el 2003, 1602 cuenta con algunas de las mejores ilustraciones de Andy Kubert hasta la fecha, así como bellísimas portadas de Scott McKowen. Cada detalle en 1602 tiene una justificación: por ejemplo, la influencia lingüística de los francófonos (así, en vez de Peter Parker tenemos a Peter Parquagh); el uso frecuente de canciones, tales como la balada que narra el destino del bajel Fantastick  y sus cuatro tripulantes, reafirma prácticas culturales típicas del siglo XVII. Del mismo modo, como muchos estudiosos de Shakespeare sabrán, hombres disfrazados de mujeres -o mujeres disfrazadas de hombres- era una tendencia común, y no sólo en el teatro isabelino (por eso no debería inquietar a nadie que Jean Grey finja ser 'John' Grey).

Como queda demostrado en Sandman, Gaiman es un experto de la era de Shakespeare. En 1602, utiliza todo su conocimiento histórico para reforzar el relato y el mundo que crea. Es fascinante observar, por ejemplo, cómo la velocidad puede ser uno de los más deseadas cualidades para el Gran Inquisidor (Magneto). Efectivamente, enviar un mensaje de un país a otro podría tomar varios días, por ello un hombre capaz de correr miles de millas por hora (Quiksilver) repentinamente se convierte en el más indispensable miembro de la hermandad de Magneto.

The Phoenix Effect / El efecto Fénix

Velocidad es justo lo que Javier y sus mutantes necesitan para someter el castillo de Doom a tiempo. El Conde Otto Von Doom ha apresado a los Cuatro del Fantastick (Sir Richard Reed, Captain Benjamin Grimm, John Storm y Susan Storm). Doom, conocido como el Apuesto, no tiene problemas en ceder a un exhibicionismo descarado al mantener relaciones sexuales frente a la Mujer Invisible (perpetuamente invisible y atrapada en una urna de cristal). Doom ha diseñado refinados métodos de castigo para Richard Reed y sus compañeros, pero ninguno rivaliza con el perverso escenario en el que la mirada del otro (en este caso un otro que no se ve pero que está allí, Susan Storm) sirve de sostén para sus proezas sexuales.

Con la inquisición en España y el racismo del Rey James en Inglaterra, parece no haber un lugar para los mutantes en Europa. Javier y sus discípulos huyen al nuevo continente, a América, ayudados por los Cuatro del Fantastick , el dios nórdico del trueno y Rojhaz, quien de hecho es Steve Rogers -Capitán América- un involuntario viajero temporal. Su presencia, no obstante, ha creado una ruptura en el tiempo que debe ser arreglada por Richard Reed antes que la Tierra sea destruida.

A diferencia de trabajos previos de Gaiman, esto es sobre todo aventura. La acción y los momentos cautivadores están cuidadosamente unidos con las ideas originales y la vibrante reimaginación de los héroes del universo Marvel clásico. Tuve la oportunidad de leer esta miniserie algunos años después de la fecha de publicación, y aunque el Internet ya me había estropeado algunas de las sorpresas, la disfruté tremendamente.

Marvel 1602 - Neil Gaiman

“What if..?” stories are no easy feat. Sure, we can all fantasize about what would happen if we remove certain characters from their established world and era… but could we intertwine the fates of our protagonists in such a way that the final result is a story so meaningful and powerful that we simply can’t stop reading? Neil Gaiman accomplishes precisely that in Marvel’s 1602. 


The British writer reconstructs a time and a place he knows like the back of his hand, and as a result everything feels natural; from the first page, the story flows effortlessly, providing us with all the necessary information in just a few lines. We are in England, in the year 1602. Queen Elizabeth is an old woman plagued by a serious illness; she is so desperate that she has hired Doctor Stephen Strange as her personal physician, defying the advices of Sir Nicholas Fury, the Crown’s intelligencer. Doctor Strange blends in perfectly in an era of superstition and magical beliefs; at the same time, Fury’s character has a fundamental mission: to protect the queen by spying on other people and gathering relevant information. Plots and conspiracies have been well documented by historians, but here the men behind the intrigues are others: the Grand Inquisitor, King James of Scotland and Count Otto Von Doom, the Handsome.

When the Marvel universe was shaped in the 60s by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and many other legendary creators, we didn’t have the plethora of characters that exist now. It was a smaller universe, more self-contained, and Gaiman takes advantage of that by using only the most traditional Marvel characters. With the exception of Iron Man, all the main heroes have their counterpart in the early 17th century.

The inquisition used to burn whomever they accused as heretic. So, how would religious zealots react if they saw a man with wings? Would they find in him an angelic nature or a demon in disguise? In fact, how could mutants be treated by those who would find congenic malformations as proof of the devil’s intervention? In 1602, mutants, called witchbreed, are persecuted by many. Nevertheless, one man named Carlos Javier offers safe haven in his “College for the Sons of Gentlefolk”. When the X-Men were created decades ago, the original team included Cyclops, Jean Grey (formerly known as Marvel Girl), Angel, Beast and Ice Man. In 1602 the core team still remains the same, albeit the differences provoke unexpected complications. For example, the winged man seems to be very keen on John Gray, but what manner of relationship do they want? Is it simple friendship or a romance doomed to be forfeit?

Earth seems to be suffering weird atmospheric phenomena, and many believe the end of the world is upon them. Even the Queen is worried, so she sends forth Fury to retrieve the mysterious treasure of the Knights Templar. Fury entrusts this mission to a blind man that knows no fear, the blind Matthew Murdock.

Las historias del tipo "¿qué pasaría si es que...?" no son una hazaña sencilla. Por supuesto, siempre podemos fantasear sobre qué pasaría si es que colocamos a ciertos personajes en un mundo y una época diferentes... pero, ¿podríamos vincular los destinos de nuestros protagonistas de tal modo que el resultado final fuese una historia tan significativa y poderosa que no pudiésemos dejar de leer? Neil Gaiman logra precisamente eso en Marvel 1602.

Doom

El autor británico reconstruye una era y un espacio que conoce como la palma de su mano, y como resultado todo se siente natural; desde la primera página, la historia fluye fácilmente, y toda la información necesaria está disponible con tan sólo algunas líneas. Estamos en Inglaterra, en el año 1602. La reina Elizabeth es una mujer mayor asediada por las enfermedades; tal es su desesperación que ha contratado al Doctor Stephen Strange como su médico de cabecera, desafiando los consejos Sir Nicholas Fury, investigador de la Corona. Doctor Strange encaja a la perfección en una era dominada por la superstición y las creencias mágicas; mientras que el personaje de Fury tiene una misión: proteger a la reina espiando a todo los que resulten sospechosos. Las intrigas y conspiraciones han sido bien documentadas por historiadores, no obstante aquí los hombres detrás de los atentados son otros: el Gran Inquisidor, el Rey James de Escocia y el Conde Otto Von Doom, el Apuesto.

Cuando el Universo Marvel se creó, no existía la plétora de personajes que hay actualmente. Era un universo más pequeño, más manejable, y Gaiman aprovecha eso al usar solamente a los más tradicionales personajes de Stan Lee, Jack Kirby y Steve Ditko. Con excepción de Iron Man, todos tienen su contrapartida a inicios del siglo XVII.

La inquisición quemaba a los herejes. Así es que, ¿cómo reaccionarían estos fanáticos religiosos al ver a un hombre con alas? ¿Encontrarían en él una naturaleza angélica o una obra demoníaca? De hecho, ¿cómo serían tratados los mutantes por estos sujetos temerosos del diablo y de las malformaciones físicas? Los mutantes son perseguidos salvajemente. Sin embargo, un visionario de nombre Carlos Javier ofrece un refugio seguro en su "Universidad para los hijos de los gentiles".

El equipo original de los X-Men, décadas atrás, incluía a Cyclops, Jean Grey (también conocida como Marvel Girl), Angel, Beast y Ice Man. En 1602 los integrantes siguen siendo cinco, aunque las diferencias provocan inesperadas complicaciones. Por ejemplo, el hombre alado siente un gran interés por John Gray, pero ¿qué tipo de relación anhela? ¿una simple amistad o un romance que sería condenado y prohibido?

La Tierra sufre inexplicables fenómenos atmosféricos, y muchos creen que el fin del mundo se acerca. Incluso la reina está preocupada, y por ello envía a Fury a recuperar el misterioso tesoro de los Caballeros Templarios. Fury encarga esta misión a un ciego que no conoce el miedo, Matthew Murdock.

Oficios a la Limeña - Charo Echecopar (Dédalo)

Este jueves se inauguró en Dédalo la muestra fotográfica “Oficios a la Limeña” de Charo Echecopar. Apenas llegué, me encontré con mi amiga Ximena Castro de Quantrill y me comentó que Echecopar tenía a sus hijos en Los Reyes Rojos. Así que, de un modo u otro, muchos éramos allí ex-alumnos o reyrrojinos honorarios. Le comenté ese detalle a María Elena Fernández y también a Eduardo Lores (nos tomamos un vaso de pisco tarde en la noche, cuando ya casi todos se habían ido).

Me quedé conversando con Ximena y una amiga suya durante más o menos una hora, el vino, blanco y tinto, nos reanimó en esa noche de invierno limeño. Más tarde, estuve comentando las fotos con Rony Alhalel. El trabajo de Echecopar es una forma especial, contrastada, singular, de observar esa realidad tan cotidiana y tan universal que, a veces, simplemente ignoramos o elegimos dejar de lado. Como le comentaba a Alhalel, después de haber pasado los últimos seis veranos en Asia (tomando pisco sour con Ximena y Rodrigo), significó un tremendo impacto ir a una playa pública este verano, mientras colaboraba con la campaña de Augusto Rey. Una de las fotografías de la muestra fue tomada exactamente en la misma playa en la que estuve caminando con Augusto, y si bien no fui testigo de la escena retratada, acepto su veracidad (y sí, es algo que, en todo caso, no se vería en una playa de Asia).
