March Films / Películas de marzo

Jordan Peele writes and directs Get Out (2017), a captivating story that portrays interracial relationships in a unique way. When Daniel Kaluuya decides to meet the parents of his girlfriend Allison Williams, racial tensions and questions of power and dominance arise. However, there is much more going on than simple racism, and what begins as a weird and intriguing premise turns out to be an intense and suspenseful horror story. The cast includes Caleb Landry Jones (Antiviral), Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich) and Bradley Whitford.

In 2014, Dominic Haxton directed Tonight it’s Me, and 2 years later he wrote and directed Tonight it’s You (2016), once again starring Jake Robbins, famous for his multiple roles as a gay teenager in Interior. Leather Bar, Teens Like Phil and Tonight it’s Me. Haxton creates a harrowing and disturbing story about the fears and expectations of young gay men hooking app through apps like Grindr. Jake Robbins agrees to meet Ian Lerch for a night of casual sex, but that is the beginning of a nightmare that will haunt him for life. This is an extremely powerful and intense horror short film. Highly recommended!

Sven Hensel’s Cruising (2016) is an interesting German short film that revolves around apps like Grindr, that reduce most interactions to anonymous sex. It’s in this context in which Philipp Uhlig, a shy, gay teenager that spends most of his time with his straight friends, Florian Teiss and Kevin Schellenberger, decides to hook up with random guys, night after night. Until he meets Maximilian Dietz, and although at first their relationship starts with an erection and ends with an orgasm, the need for a stronger, deeper connection, grows.

Michael Van Devere writes and directs American Sleeper (2016); described as a bromance in the military, it is actually an experimental short-film about a young man who can’t find a suitable outlet to express all the affection he has been repressing toward one of his friends and comrades in the army. An interesting premise.

Peruvian filmmaker Javier Fuentes-León writes and directs Contracorriente (2009), a beautiful and poignant film about relationships and the restrictions placed upon us by society. Cristian Mercado is a strong man, respected by all, and considered by many as the leader of his community. But he doesn’t seem to be interested in his pregnant wife, Tatiana Astengo. In fact, he often has sex with another man, Manolo Cardona. This forbidden relationship is kept as a shameful secret, until one of them has an accident and dies. However, the dead lover remains as a phantasm, and forces the protagonist to reevaluate his sexual identity and his masculine role in a traditional society. Contracorriente is a magnificent film, rich in emotions, a unique blend of beauty, sorrow and loss.

El reparto incluye a Caleb Landry Jones (Antiviral), Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich) y Bradley Whitford.

En 2014, Dominic Haxton dirigió Tonight it's Me, y dos años más tarde, escribió y dirigió Tonight it's You (2016), una vez más protagonizada por Jake Robbins, famoso por sus numerosos papeles como adolescente gay eInterior. Leather BarTeens Like Phil y Tonight it’s Me.

Video Clip - Tanino Liberatore

There is a strange connection between films and comics, and I’m not the first one to notice it. Nevertheless, whereas the seventh art has feed from the ninth art (let’s just take a look at the success of movies based on Marvel heroes, for instance), comic books have not deliberated on the link that binds them to cinema. At least not consistently.

Perhaps, then, today it is necessary to read works such as Video Clip by Tanino Liberatore. Although at a first glance it would appear to be simply an erotic anthology, full of all sorts of perversions and bloodthirsty ruminations, a second reading will allow us to appreciate the complexity and the nuances of the extraordinary Italian artist.

Liberatore connects two important aspects of the film tradition: firstly, old movies that would set the scenes exactly as in a theater play; and secondly, movies filmed by D.W. Griffith in the first two decades of the 20th century. Griffith discovered that cinema should not obey the theatrical rules. The camera did not have to stay away from the actors, the camera could, in fact, get closer to the faces of the actors, a feat that the theater audience could never achieve from their seats. Sure, now we find that to be obvious, but back then shortening the distance was a revolution. Because being closer, means more intimacy, and more intimacy, means greater dramatic possibilities.

Video Clip includes several short stories in which Liberatore eliminates the distance in regards to his characters. The camera follows them, chases them even, and privacy is entirely exposed. “Real Vision” for example, is a clever game of gazes and, why not, camera angles. A bored teenager with an unusual hairstyle watches TV. This harmless initial sequence does not allow us to guess what will happen next. In a murderous outburst of Oedipal undertones, the unbalanced boy stabs his mother. Immediately the press cameras surround his house and he is now the figure on the TV screen.
impressive art by Liberatore / el impresionante arte de Liberatore

“Confined”, written by horror master Bruce Jones, is perhaps one of my favorites: two horny teenagers unleash their sexual urges in front of the impassive gaze of a paraplegic old man. Is it perhaps an act of cruelty? A provocation? In any case, the reaction of the old man is brutal. “An Englishman in Paris” and “Walk for Lucie” explore violence and sexuality with subtlety, while “Take care of the big emulsions” focuses entirely on photography, and the obsessions of a supermodel who hates being photographed.

Finally, “Video” takes away all inhibitions to show the uncensored activities of a teen boy. The kid is masturbating enthusiastically while watching a porn video (explicitly illustrated by Liberatore), once again, the closeness of the camera is so strong that the reader ends up invading the privacy of the protagonist. Liberatore dazzles us with his visual transitions that somehow replicate what we see in the pornographic video and the activities of the young man.

Best known for his work in the 80s, Liberatore is a legendary artist, with a very polished line, a neat pictorial treatment, and a unique ability to apply textures in both ink and color. Long ago I have expressed my admiration for other Italian masters such as Milo Manara or Eleuteri Serpieri, and I think it was about time to dedicate some words to Tanino Liberatore.

An act of provocation / un acto de provocación
"Confined" by Bruce Jones & Liberatore

Lonely pleasures / placeres solitarios

And we all know how the story ends...

The Pro - Garth Ennis & Amanda Conner

Most superheroes have secret identities and a civilian life. Clark Kent, for instance, is a journalist. Hawkman is an archeologist. Daredevil is a lawyer. Hulk is a scientist. Doctor Strange is a surgeon. And so on. Throughout many decades, we’ve become familiar with the fact that superheroes have normal, decent jobs. But isn’t it slightly baffling that out of the thousands of characters from Marvel or DC none of them has a controversial career, so to speak?

Well, Irish writer Garth Ennis probably asked himself the same question. Why do all superheroes must have a decent and respectable job? Why can’t they be something else? The answer comes unapologetically in the pages of “The Pro”, a tale about “a superpowered prostitute with a lousy attitude”.

The story begins with a street whore, a woman who tries to make a few bucks to feed her baby and pay the rent. A woman without hope, without joy, with nothing but the searing certainty that all she can do in life is suck cocks or bend down to get penetrated by stingy men who always try to pay her less than they should.

That’s how her life goes until the Viewer (AKA the Voyeur), a merciless parody of Marvel’s the Watcher, decides to intervene and grants her amazing superpowers. Suddenly she can fly, she has super-strength and superhuman endurance.
The Pro punishes the enemy / la Pro castiga al enemigo

Of course, even with powers she is still a bitch. She swears, she smokes and she has no problems in accusing the members of the League of Honor of being the greatest perverts she’s ever met. Even so, she’s welcomed into the ranks of the world’s premiere superhero team. Once again, Ennis satirical approach dissects the classic superhero archetypes and turns the Justice League of America into a group of do-gooders with a holier-than-thou behavior. Although their perversions are hidden under this peaceful and respectable façade.

When the League tries to save the UN, The Pro points out how all those ambassadors pay for the weirdest and kinkiest sexual encounters one could possibly imagine. Her “golden shower” moment can’t compare with the depravities she has seen in the past. Obviously, the vulgarity, the wild sexuality and profanity of The Pro scandalizes all members of the League. Especially the Saint, a Superman parody, who eventually is seduced by the prostitute and agrees to a blow job proposal that will have major repercussions for his sanctimonious reputation.

The Lady, a Wonder Woman parody, exhibits certain lesbian tendencies, while Speedo, a Flash parody, can’t stop masturbating in the presence of the Pro. At super-speed, of course, he’s able to ejaculate and wipe out his dick without anyone taking notice of his actions…

The Saint gets a blow job / el Santo recibe sexo oral
Of course, no satire would be complete without rubbing in a little bit of Wertham’s fears. As suggested by the psychiatrist, Batman and Robin are the ultimate gay couple, although they’ve never been as obviously out of the closet as Knight and Squire (parodies of the Dynamic Duo).

Finally, the Lime is the typical black character that exists only to act like a black man, in the most stereotyped manner (similar, certainly, to the way in which minorities were inappropriately portrayed in the 50s and 60s), reaffirming the inherent racism in a world populated by white superheroes.

Surely, as a reader you won’t be able to stop laughing as the absurd adventures of the Pro go on, but the humor doesn’t take away the social criticism. In the end, there is a bitter affirmation about this wonderful and colorful universe of escapism. Superheroes don’t matter, nothing they do has real consequences, they claim to save humanity but they are unable help regular people, they can’t change our society so that impoverished women like the Pro won’t have to sell their bodies in order to survive.

Perhaps, for Ennis, the real prostitution lies in corporate trademarks and franchises disguised as cultural icons, and in the greedy nature of editors and businessmen who want only to squeeze every dollar out of the pockets of mindless fanboys that will endlessly consume the latest iteration of their favorite childhood heroes.

Speedo masturbates at superspeed / Speedo se masturba a súpervelocidad

The League of Honor / la Liga del Honor

The Pro uses her powers to make a few bucks /

Who said 11 isn’t a magical number? In August I had the opportunity to see 11 films. The gem of the month, of course, is Psycho. However, if I had to choose only 21st century productions then the award would go to Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Art of Getting By. I recommend them.

I loved Red (based on the graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner), and I was impatient to see the sequel. Watching Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Brian Cox and Anthony Hopkins playing superspy games, plotting against other nations, conspiring with secret agents and shooting and killing his enemies seemed like the perfect antidote against boredom. And although Red 2 (2013) is fun and has some fine scenes, it’s not nearly as good as the first one. And that’s a shame, because with such an exceptional cast I had high expectations.

Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) is a surreal journey through the bayous of Louisiana. Told from the point of view of a child, everything about her world feels like a dream. The poverty, the human misery and the motley crew of outcasts that inhabit ‘The Bathtub’ are surprising and fascinating. Quvenzhané Wallis does a superb job as Hushpuppy, but the filmmaker’s real achievement is making us believe everything we see, no matter how surreal or incredible it looks. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” delivers one emotional blow after another, combined with childhood innocence and oneiric fantasy.

Gavin Wiesen’s The Art of Getting By (2011) begins with Freddie Highmore, a taciturn teenager, quoting statistics about mortality rates. If everyone dies, then what is the point of worrying about what we do in life? But the boy is wrong, because what we do is important. And that’s what he learns when he falls in love with Emma Roberts, when she cheats on him with his best friend (Michael Angarano), when he’s about to be expelled from high school and when his mother tells him that they’re ruined and they’ve just lost their house. The Art of Getting By balances the most abstract existentialist thoughts with the facts of life: the first kiss, the pain and joy of falling in love, the awkwardness of having an erection at the wrong moment, the dreams of the future and the harsh reality of the present. A very impressive film.

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) is an indisputable classic. I had the chance to go to the movies and see it in high definition as a part of a Hitchcock festival. Why is it a classic? Because after 53 years it continues to be one of the most intense and suspenseful stories ever. And the best part is that no matter how many parodies or homages you’ve seen, Hitchcock always finds the best way to surprise you. Janet Leigh steals thousands of dollars and flees town, but she ends up in the Bates motel (run by Anthony Perkins). And the rest… the rest is cinematographic history. The extraordinary music and the unforgettable scenes, combined with a brilliant plot, have granted Psycho a place in the list of the best films and a place in my personal Top 20.

I’ve seen my fair share of exorcist movies… perhaps that’s one of the least interesting horror subgenres but even so I must say I enjoyed The Possession (2012). Perhaps the main difference is that this is not your typical exorcism, it’s a Jewish exorcism and the evil that possesses the body of young girl is a dibbuk, a Hebrew demon, with all the particularities that come with it. It has some frightening scenes and the story is quite solid.

Carriers (2009), directed by David Pastor and Àlex Pastor, kept me at the edge of my seat. Sure, everyone here knows that I love zombie movies, and in a way Carriers plays with the dynamic of the living dead: there is a deadly virus that infects people, however they don’t turn into zombies: they start rotting and coughing blood. A group of young people have managed to stay alive for months. Their strategy: avoid the main roads, circumvent big towns, and keep on driving. If they stop, they’ll run out of luck. And that’s what happens when they find a man and his daughter, a little girl who has been infected. Together, they travel around a country that no longer exists, passing through cities in ruins and highways filled with destroyed cars and rotten bodies. Of course, this sort of story can’t have a happy ending, but what captivated me the most was to see how an already sad status quo evolves (or devolves) into a state of misery and despair. The struggle for survival is brutal. And that’s made evident in the final confrontation between the two protagonists (Chris Pine and Lou Taylor Pucci), two brothers at the verge of the abyss.

Although it lasts more than two hours Perfume: Story of a Murderer (2006) doesn’t have one single boring moment. From the cruel initial scene, a pestilent market in Paris and a woman trying to abort her son, to the execution of the woman and the survival of the baby. The child is Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) and every person close to him dies in one way or another. He has one unique ability that places him far above mortal men: a perfect olfactory sense. Working for Dustin Hoffman he becomes obsessed with capturing the smell of young girls. When he starts killing girls and experimenting on them to retain their natural smell, everyone fears for the lives of their daughters, especially Alan Rickman. Tom Tykwer is a talented director, and Perfume may be his greatest project to date; there are some outstanding sequences (like a big orgy involving hundreds of naked actors and actresses on scene). Writer Andrew Birkin (who directed the brilliant “The Cement Garden”) proves his talent by turning Patrick Süskind’s best-selling novel into a riveting screenplay.

Long before the Columbine massacre, American teens seemed to have strong homicidal tendencies. The Boys Next Door (1985), directed by Penelope Spheeris, explores the lives of two teenagers (Maxwell Caulfield and Charlie Sheen) and how, after graduation, they go on a killing spree. The two boys start with pranks, but very quickly their transgressions become more and more serious. Throughout this unusual road movie, the friendship between the kids is explored as well as their motivations. Everything Maxwell Caulfield wants is to get laid, whereas Charlie Sheen is dominated by his killing impulses. Eventually, Maxwell Caulfield manages to have sex, but Charlie Sheen, perhaps out of jealousy, kills the woman. The Boys Next Door is a mature examination of adolescence, sexuality and violence, in the frame of a cruel society. In the end, you’ll realize that a coldblooded murderer can be… the boy next door.

This time we only have 3 international productions: The Everlasting Secret Family (1988) is an Australian drama that focuses on the life of a senator and his lover, a high school boy. As the years go by, the senator gets married and has a son, but he never lets go of his male lover. This creates a rather sinister family secret. It had interesting moments, but it could’ve been much better.

I’ve seen hundreds of weird films, but Le roi de l’évasion (2009) is too strange, even for me. I honestly had no idea what was the director’s intention. Here an obese, gay, middle-aged man decides to have sex with an underage girl. There are moments too odd and ridiculous. Probably the only thing I enjoyed about this was to see Nicolas Robin appearing on a couple of scenes.

Jörg Andreas directs Gefangen (2004), a chronicle of the hardships of life in a German jail. But even in the most awful of places, love can be found. That’s true for Marcel Schlutt, a young man who falls in love with an African American. However, the Germans inmates consider an aberration to have a white boy being sodomized by a black man, and infuriated they rape the boy.

Sin embargo, si eligiera solamente producciones del siglo XXI el premio iría para "Beasts of the Southern Wild" y "The Art of Getting By".

A.D.D. Adolescent Demo Division - Douglas Rushkoff & Goran Sudžuka

The Adolescent Demo Division is what every teenager dreams about: no responsibilities, no commitments, 24/7 online gaming and free stuff, courtesy of America’s biggest corporation. The A.D.D. is a group of adolescents raised from birth to play online games and be the unrivaled celebrities of the entertainment industry. Treated like royalty in the gamers community, they live in a world of their own: secluded and protected in a corporate facility designed only to nurture their gaming proclivity.

The captain of the A.D.D. is Karl, and his best friend is Lionel. Together they try to smile at fans at gaming conventions but they know that, for all their fame and popularity, deep down they are despised and even feared by ‘normal’ people (or ‘realworlders’ as they call them). Karl knows that his friend enjoys a good wank every now and then, aroused by Kasinda’s presence, the only girl in the entire Demo Division. Lionel feels a bit ashamed about this, but as Karl reminds him, at least he can still get a boner, most of these kids can’t.

Having sex is a thing of the past, games are all that matter /

In order to achieve the highest scores, these teens have been trained only to play games, and thus their social skills are almost nonexistent and their sexual drive has been rechanneled into winning online tournaments. They never have sex, they don’t even jerk off. The closest they get is playing games of high sexual content, in which their reactions (heartbeats, hormonal balance, glands secretions) are analyzed to design even sexier products for the general public. But some of them, in the solitude of their bedrooms or in the showers, are able to resurrect a sexuality that has long staid dormant.

Lionel is a special boy. He sees through the patterns and beyond the obvious imagery of games, and understands what’s behind them: product placement, subliminal publicity, hypnotic messages. Killing giant ants in a sci-fi scenario is, in fact, an invitation to join the army; changing the appearance of your online avatar is a request to renew your wardrobe; a car race is a suggestion to open a bank account and so on.

As Lionel discusses with Karl, most of these hidden advertisements rely on a powerful element: sexual frustration. The campaign focuses on the unsatisfied sexual lives of millions of teenagers worldwide and offers them a deceitful palliative: a different brand of clothing, collectible cellphone models, new game levels, etc. All this sexual frustration, in Lacanian terms, is joy, id est, an accumulation of tensions, a build-up towards some inscrutable outcome. The opposite of joy is pleasure, and that’s something neither the realworlders nor the A.D.D. are familiar with. Joy sells, pleasure doesn’t.

The death of Karl, captain of the Adolescent Demo Division /
La muerte de Karl, capitán la División Demo Adolescente

Of course, Karl makes fun of Lionel’s crazy theories. What the young man sees is merely a reflection of his own blue balls. And certainly, Lionel is in a perpetual state of sexual frustration: Kasinda, the girl he loves and fantasizes about suffers from haptephobia: an intense fear of being touched; repulsion to physical contact. But in a world populated by a generation of youngsters so immersed in their computers and gaming devices, isn’t this the logical result? Isolated teens easily become unrestrained consumers; if teenagers stay home, making online purchases, then the companies can create even more products targeted to them.

This is why Nextgen Inc., the corporation in charge of A.D.D., has big plans for the next generation. So far, they have persuaded their consumers, influenced their decisions, but that’s not enough. Nextgen Inc.’s true goal is to reprogram their captive audience. Nextgen Inc. doesn’t care about the high scores A.D.D. gets in gaming championships, they care only for profit. Consequently they experiment with these kids, who’ve been subjected to advertising since they were born, to identify the parts of the brain that resist the subliminal messages… Once they’ve identified the neural resistance they can eliminate it, effectively creating a new generation of blind consumers, a mindless herd that will be under the total control of Nextgen Inc.

In a way, a generation of mindless consumers can already be glimpsed in today’s world: we live in an era in which aggressive marketing reigns supreme and in which consumerism has become the definitive lifestyle, discarding those who can’t keep up the rhythm as consumers. Humanity is no longer cooperative, as it was in the past, now it’s only competitive. Therefore “A.D.D. is one part prophecy, one part critique” as Cory Doctorow affirms.

Nevertheless, when Karl dies in the laboratories of Nextgen Inc., Lionel discovers that the world he knew was a lie. Instead of being rewarded, the best players are sent to the labs. Lionel is afraid, he knows he’s next. The most terrifying thing is that, submerged in virtual reality and online gaming, none of his teammates seem to grasp the concept of death. Some claim that Karl hasn’t died, that his corpse is only a computer generated image (in fact, some compare his blood with the graphics of a well-known game); Takai, Lionel’s friend, thinks that Karl will simply get an ‘extra’ life in the next level, as usual.

The showers: a very real and dangerous game /

Karl’s death is a huge shock for Lionel, and although he tries to convince the others that there’s no such thing as a reward for the best players, his immediate rival, Matt, doesn’t pay attention to him. In fact, Matt is one of the few kids sexually active, and he decides to humiliate Lionel in the showers. Matt grabs Takai and forces him to suck on Lionel’s penis, it’s only thanks to the timely intervention of the security personnel that nothing else happens. Another assault takes place in the showers, the morning after, but this time Lionel fights like a lion, the naked boys hit each other but in the end it’s Lionel who comes out on top.

A.D.D. also stands for Attention Deficit Disorder, and that seems to be one of the characteristics of Takai. However, he and Kasinda join Lionel in an attempt to escape from their corporate imprisonment. As they travel through the building’s ventilation tunnels, Lionel can’t avoid getting an erection (a turge, in his own words) after taking a good look at Kasinda’s ass. As soon as Takai falls asleep, Lionel tries to kiss the girl but she refuses. She can’t accept the idea of being touched by somebody else. Lionel is really horny and Kasinda decides to undress in front of him, she won’t allow to be touched but she’ll make sure to inspire him to touch himself. Thus the notion of the specular image and the masturbatory compulsion are reunited in this moving moment between a boy and a girl; even when they’re together, they’re still miles apart, she’s still afraid of human contact and he’s still jerking off to an unrealized fantasy. There’s nothing real for them to hold on to. And perhaps that’s the reason why, after escaping from Genext Inc. they realize how impossible it is to adapt to the real world.

Douglas Rushkoff has written one of the most incisive and thought-provoking graphic novels of the decade, evaluating the condition of the world, the paradigm shifts and the future that awaits us. Goran Sudžuka’s artistic skills turn what could have an ethereal concept into a well-grounded reality, with characters that look so young, so vulnerable and above all so human; his magnificent illustrations are enhanced by the work of José Marzán Jr., and Tanya and Richard Horie. Social criticism, innovation and a harsh assessment on the way technology influences our socialization are fundamental aspects of this original graphic novel that will surely stand the test of time.

As Grant Morrison explains “In a world defined by ubiquitous media, best-selling wargames, autistic disorders and the commodification and exploitation of youth, Douglas Rushkoff and artist Goran Sudžuka vivisect the zeitgeist with a sleek tale of tomorrow’s children, that’s part social sci-fi and part X-Men for the Playstation generation”. Nonetheless, whereas the X-Men are always triumphant in their adventures, there can be no guarantee of victory for the A.D.D., perhaps not even the possibility of survival. And as the final showdown between the powerful corporation and this awkward group of teens takes place, one thing remains clear: not only do we live in a world of consumerism, we may have been consumed by it long ago, and perhaps we don’t even know it.

Lionel versus Matt

Lionel comes out on top / Lionel se alza victorioso

Lionel can look, but not touch... masturbation is his only choice /

Teenagers versus adults / Adolescentes versus adultos
