January Films / películas de enero

The year is just starting but I’ve already found plenty of good movies. Let’s start with the widely popular The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug (2013), it was so great to see Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom reprising their roles, and there were a couple of very solid scenes (especially those involving elves), but I still think Peter Jackson should have done one movie instead of a trilogy.

For Ellen (2012) is a very delicate examination of the emotional upheavals of Paul Dano, a guy that has never met her daughter. And when he does, he doesn’t know how to be a dad. Sadness, laughter, it’s all here.

Based on a theater play, William Friedkin’s Killer Joe (2011) is a superb exercise of violence and drama. Emile Hirsch wants to kill her mother to collect the insurance, and so he hires Matthew McConaughey, a ruthless killer. But his decision will destroy the family. Influenced by Tarantino, Friedkin creates a unique atmosphere of suspense that will make your heart stop… right after you feel blood dripping down your face.

Devon Graye is a teenager who gets lost in a cornfield in Husk (2011), a scary production about an abominable presence that lives inside scarecrows. It’s the kind of horror I always enjoy.

Based on a real life case, The Mark of Cain (2007) denounces violations to human rights in the Iraq war. Gerard Kearns, a young soldier, is forced to participate in a sexual assault, an event that will ruin his life.

Switchback (1997) is a great thriller about a serial killer who befriends Jared Leto, a young hitchhiker. Dennis Quaid, an FBI agent, is following the trail of bodies while these two men embark on a deadly road trip.

Talented filmmakers Dominic Haxton & David Rosler tackle on suicidal tendencies in Teens Like Phil (2012), an impressive short film about two high school kids (Adam Donovan & Jake Robbins). Bullied and estranged, the two boys experiment a strange attraction for each other. Although one of them finds in male bodies a strong masturbatory inspiration, he’s too young and too insecure to admit his true feelings. What I loved the most about Teens Like Phil is how honest it is, and how well it portrays teenage angst.

Till Kleinert’s Boys Village (2011) is a haunting tale about abandonment and solitude. Benjamin Thorne, a kid, spies Andrew McQueen’s solitary practices, but here getting caught masturbating can be lethal.

Evan Roberts left me awestruck with 33 Teeth and he does it again with the sweet and funny Yeah Kowalski! (2013), a very charming depiction of the insecurities we experience growing up. Cameron Wofford is 13 years old, and he can’t wait to have hairy armpits, like Conor Donnelly, the boy he has a crush on.

Mark Pariselli audaciously exploits sexual fantasies in After (2010), a notable short film about 3 gay kids that imagine what would it be like to have a sexual experience with a hot soccer player. For Cole J. Alvis and his friends, everything begins with a masturbatory dream that soon expands onto their most intimate fetishes.

Little Gay Boy Christ is Dead (2012) is a very experimental production about Gaëtan Vettier, an attractive but unlucky young man that is constantly harassed and sexually abused by every man or woman he encounters.

Morten Tyldum’s Hodejegerne (2011) is a powerful thriller. Extreme suspense and an astonishing plot will keep you at the edge of your seat. Aksel Hennie is a man obsessed with luxury, and to procure additional funds he steals famous works of art, until he tries to take a Reuben painting from Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (the Kingslayer from House Lannister in Game of Thrones), an intimidating enemy that will turn Aksel’s life into a living hell.

Reza Bagher’s Populärmusik från Vittula (2004) is a coming of age story about two teens growing up in Sweden in the 60s and finding their passion in life thanks to the new and popular rock & roll music. Max Enderfors is a teenager that spend most of his time masturbating and dreaming about his first sexual experience. Andreas af Enehjelm, an eccentric boy, feels very attracted to Max, his best friend. Together they form the first rock band of the school, but whereas Max is enjoying his first forays into the sexual arena thanks to the attention of an older woman, Andreas must survive the beatings and abuses he receives from his father, a deeply religious individual who hates everything Andreas does, including his rock & roll music. Dramatic, touching and inspiring, it’s simply one of the best films I’ve seen in months.

Without a doubt, Marco Berger is one of the finest Latin-American directors; specialized in creating sexual tension, he explores the thin line between eroticism and illusion, carnality and repressed feelings. Hawaii (2013) is a brilliant film, an intelligent and deeply moving chronicle about two young men: Mateo Chiarino, a jobless guy searching for anything that can help him survive and Manuel Vignau, who decides to hire him. As they spend the summer together, very slowly, their moral and sexual barriers begin to collapse. Even if Manuel admires Mateo’s nakedness every chance he gets, he feels like he cannot touch him. If a relationship is impossible, is because of the heterosexual normativity and also because of socioeconomic differences.

Guy Édoin’s Marécages (2011) proves that life as farmer is never idyllic. A married couple struggles for the financial survival of their farm; the woman overprotects her son, and the father is angry at him for his laziness. Gabriel Maillé is an enigmatic teenager who enjoys spending his time and energies climbing trees and jerking off in the fields, instead of paying attention to his daily chores. When the father dies, this already precarious balance is drastically altered. This is a brutal story that hits you in the chest and leaves you breathless; as real and as painful as everyday life, Marécages is an example of the best Canadian cinematography of the 21st century.

La chatte à deux têtes (2002) focuses on the sordid practices that take place in a French porno theater. The promiscuity, the anonymous and mutual masturbations –always in the dark– and the feeling of despair permeate a suffocating ambiance of decadence, populated by HIV infected people and lonely, old gay men.

Corps Perdu (2012), written and directed by Lukas Dhont, is a wonderful short film from Belgium that explores with subtlety the sexual confusion of Jelle Florizoone, a teenager that devotes his time to ballet until he accidentally runs into a small time crook, a man that awakens in him feelings he never knew or experienced before. The fantastically talented Jelle Florizoone conveys a sense of loneliness and sexual longing, while retaining the dreamer-like nature of a boy that is still discovering his body and the secrets of his heart.

Noel Alejandro’s Eloi & Biel (2013) revolves around non simulated sexual intercourse, male nudity and real ejaculation. When 2 gay boys find an abandoned house, they decide to break in and have bareback sex.
