May comics / cómics de mayo

After my trip to Lima, Perú, I returned to Davis, CA, just in time to read last month’s comics. I’m such a big fan of Darick Robertson that of course I had to pick up Batman Fortress # 1 and I must say it was captivating! I hadn’t read any Peter David comic in ages, and I really liked his New Fantastic Four! The conclusion of the Eternals was as good as I would’ve hoped. The Nice House on the Lake continues to be one of the most exciting titles out there, one I eagerly await for each month. DC Pride: Tim Drake Special was a complete surprise and definitely of the most endearing comics from DC that I’ve read in a long time... Robin finally comes out of the closet and starts exploring his sexuality. Hit Me was the most shocking comic I’ve read lately, the misadventures of a prostitute that caters uniquely to sadistic clients, for the right price you can hit her, and for extra fees, you can inflict as much damage as you want, brutal in a good way, if not for the technicality that this wasn’t strictly a May comic, I would choose it as the best one of the bunch. From the master of sequential narrative and artist extraordinaire, Geof Darrow, comes another fabulous Shaolin Cowboy miniseries, “Cruel to be Kin”, I absolutely enjoyed the first two issues, and I’d say that for best comic of the month it’s a tie between them and Milligan & Allred’s The X-Cellent #3 which was, simply put, excellent! And now without further ado, here are May comics, as per solicitations:

As an added bonus this graphic novel includes a new commentary article by both Alan Moore and the artist, Oscar Zarate.

A SMALL KILLING

BATMAN FORTRESS #1
(W) Gary Whitta (A/CA) Darick Robertson.

ETERNALS #12
(W) Kieron Gillen (A/CA) Esad Ribic.

FANTASTIC FOUR #3

SHAOLIN COWBOY CRUEL TO BE KIN #1
(W/A/CA) Geof Darrow.

CHRONICLES OF WORMWOOD LAST BATTLE TP (MR)
Garth Ennis y Oscar Jimenez.

DREADFUL BEAUTY ART OF PROVIDENCE TP (MR)
Jacen Burrows

ETERNALS #9

Streets of Glory - Garth Ennis & Mike Wolfer

Streets of Glory is a western soaked in blood but also in nostalgic tears. Irish writer Garth Ennis has an amazing ability to reconstruct the American past, more specifically the last years of the 19th century, while at the same time reflecting on political issues and analyzing what did it really mean to wipe out the Indians and build railroads in the wild west.

I was a bit unsure about whether or not I would enjoy this miniseries (originally published in Streets of Glory # 1-6, from October 2007 to October 2008), but I’ve always trusted in Ennis’ talent and I haven’t been disappointed so far. While Reading Streets of Glory I thought about my relationship with the western as a genre. Although at a first glance one would only think of gunslingers, Indians and horses, the truth is that there is much that can be told in the pages of a western. Against all odds, even I decided to write a 2-page story for a western-themed anthology, a few years ago, and while I was writing it I realized that there is much that can be done within the genre.

The idea of seeing the United States as a primitive nation, still in formation, can be quite fascinating. And I believe that’s why Ennis decided to set the story in 1899, and why he chose Joseph Dunn as the protagonist. In 2 years the 19th century will come to an end, and men like Dunn, who used to solve every problem with a bullet are about to face extinction.

The narrator of the story is Peter Lorrimer, a teenager who witnesses the murder of his brother and whose life is saved by colonel Joseph Dunn. As the story progresses, both characters try to settle in Gladback, a small town that is also the target of speculator and wealthy business man, Mr. Morrison. However, what begins as the classic clash between civilization and barbarism, represented by the need for a new railroad and the threat of Red Crow, a savage Indian who brutally kills white men, turns into something more complex.

Dunn will go after Red Crow, there will be a fierce battle in which many men are massacred, but in the end Dunn manages to kill the Indian. Nevertheless, that isn’t the end of the story. Because Dunn starts wondering why Red Crow was there in the first place, and what role Mr. Morrison is playing. Men like Dunn have exterminated the Indians and now is the turn for men like Morrison to build a new nation. The bravest man in the whole wild west has but one big fear: “I’m scared I fought hard for the country. Only to hand it to fools”.
With a gun in his hands, Dunn is invincible. But times are changing, and now it seems like the future of America lies in the hands of manipulative and greedy men like Morrison. In the end, Dunn understands that the real villain wasn’t Red Crow but rather Mr. Morrison, a man that would be considered by many as the epitome of success and civilization.

In Ennis’ own words: “I wanted to write a story that would feature the horror and brutality of the West without flinching, while at the same time not simply drowning the narrative in squalor and gore. There’s an epic quality to the great Westerns that I didn’t want to lose; the incredible scale of the country, the sense of myth that the people and places contributed to. ‘There was good in amongst all the bad’ is a simple way of putting it- probably overly so”.

Artist Mike Wolfer was certainly the right choice for this project. There are many extremely violent scenes throughout the miniseries and Wolfer really stands out at showing us all the blood and the viscera. He’s also in charge of all the regular and variant covers, some of which are a real delight. This is a really good Avatar miniseries that all Western fans will surely enjoy.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

October wasn’t an abundant month for comics, but I really enjoyed re-reading Freakangels. Thor was OK, American Gods was great but Magic Order # 3 was even greater (this the best I’ve read from Millar in a long time, plus Coipel’s art is amazing). And now without further ado, here are October comic as per solicitations:

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #7
(W) Neil Gaiman, P. Craig Russell (A) P. Craig Russell, Scott Hampton (CA) Glenn Fabry, Adam Brown. As Shadow follows Wednesday around the country, he eventually finds himself face to face with Laura, who lays down some difficult truths about the time she was alive and with him. The Hugo, Bram Stoker, Locus, World Fantasy, and Nebula award-winning novel and hit Starz television series by Neil Gaiman is adapted as a comic series!

FREAKANGELS TP VOL 1
(W) Warren Ellis (A/CA) Paul Duffield. Warren Ellis' hugely popular web comic, FREAKANGELS, is here, collected in print for the first time in this gorgeous, full-color trade paperback! The first arc of the ongoing, post-apocalyptic saga is a must-have for fans of the online series, or a perfect starting point for new readers! Twenty-three years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment. Six years later, the world ended. This is the story of what happened next. So welcome to Whitechapel, some years from now, just barely above ground in a flooded England, where a clan of eleven strange people with purple eyes -- the Freakangels -- have carved out some sort of a life for themselves. A life that starts to show big cracks when a girl called Alice from Manchester turns up with a shotgun and a grievance, having met the lost, prodigal last Freakangel, who had very different ideas about what they should do with themselves and this flooded future England. Because the Freakangels have a big secret: Something very bad is their fault. Ellis' ongoing story of a flooded London is beautifully illustrated in jaw-dropping detail by Paul Duffield, and every page is as much a work of art as it is a compelling and multi-layered story.

MAGIC ORDER #4
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) Olivier Coipel. Cordelia and Regan bargain with Madame Albany to preserve what's left of The Magic Order, while she sets out to slaughter their brother Gabriel. Meanwhile The Horologium, a monster let loose from the fourth dimension, is shredding time and destroying human lives.

THOR #6
(W) Jason Aaron (CA) Esad Ribic. ALL-FATHER THOR FACES HIS DOOM! If you thought Old Man Phoenix was crazy, then wait'll you see what we've done to Marvel's greatest villain. It's the end of the universe - and the return of Doctor Doom. A Doom more powerful than anything that has ever lived. Get ready for the greatest battle the far future has ever seen, as Old King Thor and the Phoenix Wolverine stand together at the end of time against an army of monsters and the final Doom. Rated T+

AMERICAN GODS: MY AINSEL #7

THOR #6

My first week in California has been great, and since school hasn't started yet, I had enough time to read August's comics. I'm excited to see classics like Halo Jones recolered, or to see such seminal stories like Kraven's Last Hunt in a deluxe edition. Thor, Hit-Girl, Cinema Purgatorio and Jeepers Creepers were also quite good. There were a lot of amazing comics this month, like the conclusion of the 6-issue arc of The Highest House, Marvel 2-In-One (just as good as Byrne's epic run on the FF) or the third issue of The Magic Order (which keeps getting better and better); however, my favorite comic of the month is American Gods # 5.

By the way, I already updated the post about July comics, which you can find here:

http://artbyarion.blogspot.com/2018/08/july-comics-comics-de-julio.html

BALLAD OF HALO JONES 2

Black Summer - Warren Ellis & Juan Jose Ryp

The connection between politics and superheroes has rarely been explored in DC or Marvel Comics, perhaps because editors never feel comfortable dealing with real life issues that could be controversial or simply because, as part of larger corporations, these publishers feel the obligation of being politically correct all the time. Fortunately that’s not a concern for an independent publisher like Avatar or for a defiant writer like Warren Ellis.

In “Black Summer” (originally published in Black Summer # 0-7, May 2007 – July 2008), the British author decided to write a story that begins in the White House. Horus, arguably the world’s most powerful metahuman, has decided to answer a question most superheroes would never even dare to ask: “how far do we go in pursuit of Justice?”. In order to answer that question, one must first and foremost define justice, and the easiest way to do that is by contrasting justice to injustice. For Horus, superheroes moral standards should question whether or not the American government is just or unjust; and he comes to the conclusion that the American president is committing injustice on a far greater scale than the any supervillain.

The president of the United States of America is supposed to attend a press conference in the White House; however, he is intercepted by John Horus and assassinated. When millions of viewers expect the familiar face of the president, they’re confronted with Horus, literally covered in the blood of his victim. The metahuman then explains why he assassinated the leader of the free world: “we are supposed to fight evil [...] but we are supposed to stand by while this Administration commits crimes [...] it is my belief that the war in Iraq is illegal and predicated on lies. It is my belief that our people and theirs are dying for corporate gain. It is my belief that America is now unfree”.

Should we act on beliefs? For Horus, the answer to that question is irrelevant. He has already made his decision. But he seems to be unaware of the repercussions of the assassination. The most immediate question among the American citizens is what will happen with Horus’ former friends: the Seven Guns. For Horus, the death of the president ushers in a new era for the United States. There will be free elections and Horus himself will oversee the democratic process. For Tom Noir, alcoholic, crippled and former member of the Seven Guns, this is the beginning of a hunting season that will bring about the downfall of the Seven Guns. Years ago, John Horus, Tom Noir, Kathryn Artemis, Dominic Atlas, Zoe Jump, Angel One and Laura Torch were the Seven Guns, a distorted and twisted version of the Justice League of America or The Avengers, they were never Earth’s greatest heroes but they sure are Earth’s most dangerous metahumans. After being disbanded, only Horus remained as a faithful assistant of the president until the day he decided to execute his boss.

In a matter of minutes, Tom Noir is chased down and attacked by a new generation of metahuman agents. He barely survives and is rescued by his old colleagues. Questions of loyalty soon arise: do metahumans should protect themselves from the rest of the world? What happens when they do not agree with Horus? And what happens if they agree? Because the real danger, the most controversial issue is if they believe they can step above the law and they can demote or destroy the government. Can power justify actions that are illegal? Can superpower overthrow political power? Should it? In every chapter of this fascinating saga, Ellis invites us, the readers, to reflect on those questions.

As the story progresses, it’s especially shocking to see how the country starts to fall apart. For all its vaunted power, the United States finds itself in a fragile situation. The battle is as much ideological as it is physical; and, in fact, it’s because of the conflicting ideologies that even within the ranks of the army there are officers tired of killing each other or going after the metahumans, they all disagree with each other about what should they do. Was the assassination of the president justified? What is the real meaning of the war in Iraq? What does it mean to engage in a legal or illegal conflict in the postmodern world?

With such a violent beginning, it’s quite evident that this story does not have a happy ending. Although the remaining members of the Seven Guns fight for their lives and, after much discussion, decide to go after Horus, they can’t fight against him and the new army of metahumans that follow the orders of the vicepresident. One by one, they die. And in the end, the confrontation between Horus and Noir is as dramatic as it is conclusive.

The art by Juan Jose Ryp is absolutely amazing. There are so many details in every panel, the reader can see every drop of blood and can count how many bullets are shot and how many explosions go off, of course, every corpse, every dismembered limb, every hole in the wall, is meticulously illustrated by Ryp. The Spanish artist is also able to convey expressions, feelings and emotions with an intensity that very few contemporary pencilers would be able to achieve. Furthermore there is a shared sense of design that goes along every one of the pages, enhancing an already fascinating a script by Ellis. A truly extraordinary miniseries!

Tom Noir fights to survive / Tom Noir lucha para sobrevivir
The final battle / la batalla final

Unlike previous months, in June I only got a few comics. Doctor Strange and Cinema Purgatorio were quite good. I bought Rebirth # 1 because it was a giant-sized issue with a very low price (which I always appreciate), and some of my favorite artists were in it; I have to admit it was surprisingly satisfactory. However, the best issue of the month was Alan Moore’s Providence # 9. And now, without further ado, here are June comics as per solicitations:

"Doctor Strange" y "Cinema Purgatorio" me gustaron bastante.
my drawing / mi dibujo
