Fairest # 2 - Bill Willingham & Phil Jimenez

Adam Hughes
Humanity has often tried to define the world through a series of dichotomies: day and night, life and death, good and bad. For some reason, moral characteristics such as goodness or evil are associated with certain elements. Is there something intrinsically good about the day or, in equal terms, something evil about the night?

Fairy tales, however, need a ‘black and white’ world so that they can properly exist. In a fairy tale we must see good and innocence in its purest essence and evil and treachery in its most unabashed form. In the first, issue, Ali Baba attempted to rescue Red Rose from a camp of anthropophagus goblins. In order to do so, he kissed this auburn beauty and true love destroyed the spell that kept her in slumber.

Nevertheless, the Snow Queen also awakes, and decides to chase the red-haired princess, the prince of thieves and the imp that is aiding them. Bill Willingham once again manages to combine hilarious moments with fantastic, off-the-charts developments. But Fairest wouldn’t be so impressive if not for Phil Jimenez’s art.

Years ago, I used to think that Jimenez had too much in common with George Pérez, but through the years he has perfected his style and although it still pays tribute to the classic master, now it truly stands on its own. And he just keeps getting better and better.
splash page / página inicial

The splash page is a good example of the level of dynamism Jimenez can achieve, and the subsequent double page spread shows a brilliant composition. Ali Baba and Red Rose are like two warm hemispheres about to be covered by the central image of the Snow Queen and the army of frost giants below. The following page has dramatic tension, imaginative designs and a care for details that many pencilers lack nowadays. Nevertheless, one of my favorite double page spreads is the one that lets us see the majestic hall of the King -Red Rose’s father- brimming with aristocrats, magical creatures and fairies from the Twilight Lands; this image has the undisputable beauty and grandeur of classic artists such as Hal Foster (if I had a good edition of Prince Valiant I would have commented on it long ago). Finally, the last page is a great example of why we don’t need the usual 6 panel grid that so many people use (myself included). Everything here is visually appealing and works perfectly.

The New Deadwardians # 2 - Dan Abnett & I.N.J. Culbard

“Somehow, someone has managed to murder that which was not alive”. Indeed, as we saw on the first issue, a vampire has been murdered. Chief Inspector George Suttle must find an answer to the greatest enigma he’s come across with in his career as an investigator: how can a vampire be dead if there are no stakes in the heart, if the head hasn’t been removed and if there hasn’t been any exposure to daylight? Nobody knows the answer, but everyone is deeply concerned about this case.

This isn’t the Edwardian England you’ve read about in history books. London had almost crumbled under the weight of the living dead, mindless creatures who seek only to devour the living. These ‘restless’, however, are powerless before the ‘young’, the vampiric aristocracy that rules the British Empire. For noble men and women, taking the ‘cure’ is synonym of turning into a bloodsucking creature of the night.

“Lamella” is a peculiar concept coined by Lacan. A lamella is indivisible, indestructible and immortal –id est, undead in the sense this term has in horror fiction, exemplifying the obscene immortality of the "living dead" which can be shot at, stabbed or burned and will still clumsily go on. In Lacan’s own words, lamella does not exist, it insists.

There is a reason why the zombie subgenre is a worldwide success, and it’s because it’s deeply rooted in psychoanalytic terms that, consciously or unconsciously, appeal to us. Abnett, however, dares to take this even further, as he combines the legacy of Bram Stoker with the offspring of George A. Romero.

According to Freud, the death drive could be associated with the so-called "compulsion-to-repeat," an uncanny urge to repeat painful past experiences. It happens to us when we can’t overcome certain traumas, but it’s also a useful way of describing the behavior of the living dead in horror films, because the constant hunger is indeed a compulsory drive. The restless that surround London represent this repetition, this obscene immortality whereas the vampire represent the last bastion of human rationality and the sublime immortality, the beauty of never growing old, of ageless bodies.

Sutton starts investigating the murder, and without spoiling the surprises of this issue, I can say he finds out that something very dark is going on in England’s capital city. But how could it be other way if you have vampires and zombies coexisting in the same place?

The artist of the miniseries is I.N.J. Culbard, a name I wasn’t familiar with, but I think the stylistic tone of the series must come from him. The covers are like homages to advertisement placards from that era, and the interior pages share a few elements with the poster art, an artistic movement ushered in by the likes of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Chéret and Théophile Steinlen. Here, hatching techniques or gray tones give way to contrast and bright colors.

my drawing / mi dibujo

Morte a Venezia (1971)
Directed by Luchino Visconti

Luchino Visconti was one of the greatest filmmakers in history. His bold narrative, his constant questionings and philosophical reflections easily surpass the work of most directors. "Death in Venice", based in Thomas Mann's novel, is arguably one of his best films. Many could disagree, but one has to wonder, how many film directors are able to summarize the entire Western philosophical and historical approach to beauty in one single, elegant, stroke of inspiration? Only one: Luchino Visconti.
"Gestual"

What happens when a man is obsessed with beauty? As unpredictable as it may seem, what happens is that beauty is redefined in ways the man could not have anticipated. In a society enslaved to the heterosexual normative, a man should only find beauty in women. And yet, in this passionate story beauty lies in the body of a young boy.

However, one should first define what kind of beauty this Phoebus reveals. Could one find some sort of connection to Plato's thoughts in "The Banquet"? Certainly not. Here a beautiful spirit does not equal a beautiful subject, far from it, the mind and the intellect are worthless when the body is the only substance we can dare to grab; the Platonic Ideal world has no meddling with this world, the only world we know.

In Visconti's film beauty answers, without a doubt, to the Apollonian concept of beauty as Nietzsche would understand it: Clean lines, symmetry and harmonic design that serve but one purpose: to conceal the true horror of existence, to veil and cover the real (it's only symptomatic then that the official discourse, which belongs to the symbolic order and the reality of the luxurious Venetian hotel brings the irreconcilable real to light, id est, the subversive discourse of the people who tell Achenbach the truth about the plague and the high count of bodies, and advise him to leave before it's too late). Kant would also elaborate beauty as the intrinsic relationship between life and death, and in this correlation beauty would be that which reminds people of death, which makes people accept the possibility of death; beauty could only be found in humanity's own mortality, as so many artistic masterworks convey so extraordinarily.

One could venture to affirm that Mr. Achenbach can discern young Tadzio's beauty in two different ways. First, he is the embodiment of Classic Greek Male Beauty because his body responds to Apollonian guidelines. Second, he reminds Achenbach of his own age, therefore his own mortality. Nietzsche's and Kant's understanding of beauty can come to terms in this riveting character.

According to Lacan's theories, Tadzio also places himself as a phantasmatic recipient for Achenbach's desire. In many ways, the young boy resides only in the imaginary order, he's first and foremost an image, an image full of erotic power and seductive force, but only an image at last. It's through sheer power of desire, that Achenbach seemingly vanquishes an entire life of repressed homosexual urges. Nonetheless, this is not a love story. There is neither a single conversation between Achenbach and Tadzio nor the briefest or faintest contact between them. There is only fantasy. Fantasy driven by desire. Fantasy that encapsulates and idolizes the nubile male body more than anything else.

Achenbach soon finds himself immersed in a tortuous experience. He can never reach the boy, he can only glance at him from a distance. He can never talk to him, only listen to his name when it's pronounced by his mother. He can never touch him, only envy the other boys who manhandle him during boyish roughhousing. He can never know him, only imagine him. And as Slavoj Zizek would explain, fantasy becomes more powerful than reality, fantasy becomes the fundamental support of reality. Because here Achenbach's desire is not only supported by the phantasmatic Tadzio, it depends and relies entirely on this phantom.

Perhaps Tadzio is transformed in the Lacanian phallus. The adolescent is the phallus Achenbach has long lost. Because it's made clear in the beginning of the book as well as in the first scenes of the movie, that Achenbach is a man deprived of joy, of happiness, of hope. The phallic jouissance has eluded him for so long that one as a reader or viewer starts to doubt if he could ever regain the phallus. But can the phallus be recuperated in homosexual dynamics? Lacan does not concentrate his theory in homosexuality. Sometimes it would appear as if the Lacanian concept of homosexuality is an uncomfortable byproduct of people's inability to reclaim a symbolic masculine or feminine position. Nonetheless, "Death in Venice" greatest accomplishment is to surmount these theory limitations as it ascertains a new way to understand beauty, a way to understand beauty beyond the materialistic limitations of the male and the female body.

Michele Foucault wrote in "Histoire de la Sexualite" about "bodies and pleasures" as well as poli-sexuality in Ancient Greece. Wouldn't life be healthier and better if one could concern only about bodies and pleasures, without worrying about the exact labeling imposed by social constraints, without worrying about finding the right prefix to confine one's sexual desire to a hetero-, bi-, homo-, or trans- sexuality? That question may go unanswered, but one thing is evident in Visconti's film: Art and beauty share one immortal truth: the ability to move men and women hearts in unforeseen ways; the ability to destabilize society's strict and rigid laws, the ability to find its way regardless of prohibitions or dire outcomes. "Death in Venice" as the title announces, it's not a story about love, it's rather a story about death and loss, about the possibility of beauty and the failure of desire.

Supercrooks # 2 - Mark Millar & Leinil Francis Yu

Leinil Francis Yu
The last time Johnny Bolt was arrested he spent years in jail. Now he’s a free man, but now he has decided to help his old mentor, Carmine and this time he plans to get away with the greatest heist in history. But to do so, he needs to recruit the old gang: The Ghost (world’s greatest cat-burglar), TK McCabe (the telekinetic), Forecast (weather-maker), Roddy and Sammy Diesel (the indestructible men) and at last, but not least, the Gladiator, the superhero that arrested Johnny Bolt the last time.

Convincing a group of retired super-villains to commit one last crime is not entirely difficult. Ghost is bored with his current life, TK McCabe is exploited in his job, and his wife can barely make enough money to support their daughter, Forecast makes a few dimes and quarters selling umbrellas on a rainy (he actually uses his control over the weather to create rain, but still, this business only gives him enough money to survive), Roddy and Sammy Diesel are making minimal wage, fighting against other washed-up super villains in box ring. They are all desperate to help, except for the gleaming superhero known as the Gladiator.
the indestructible men / los hombres indestructibles

Mark Millar revisits the potential of hope within the delinquent group. Here, the heroes are seen as arrogant bastards that are loved by the media but not by the people, while the former thieves and conmen are now losers looking for some sort of atonement. Winnicott said once that certain elements of antisocial behaviors often imply a modicum of hope. It may be slightly counterintuitive, but Johnny Bolt and his comrades pathological behaviors may signify a desperate attempt to regain that which is lost (according to Lacan, we’re always looking this ‘object a’ and we can never find it). "Taking" then becomes stealing, robbing, and cheating on others, and all of this often represents a striving to reclaim (or obtain for the first time) the lost object (‘object a’).

There is however something we shouldn’t forget about Lacan’s ‘object a’ is that it’s often confused with the object of our desire. Gladiator has always followed the Freudian law of copulation, marrying a pretty woman and having children. But in doing so, he has also neglected his true self. According to Lacan, the command that the superego directs to the subject is, of all things, "Enjoy!". Gladiator is the superego here, forever trying to keep in check the criminality of others. That which we believe to be most private and rebellious (our desire) is, in fact, regulated, even commanded, by the superego. And the most private desire in Gladiator’s heart is homosexual intercourse. For years, he has been meeting random men for bareback sex, and when Johnny Bolt was in jail he met one of his one-time lovers. Now, he has tricked Gladiator into meeting him, and as the two men sit in a Spanish café, something is made evident: Gladiator can’t survive the media scandal if the pics that Johnny Bolt has are released to the public. Gladiator can’t face the guilt of having her daughter learn in the news about his secret escapades. And he can’t accept all this because he himself is the embodiment of the superego (id est, guilt).

The second installment of Supercrooks was perhaps even better than the first one, and I’m absolutely sure that Millar will keep surprising us. Leinil Francis Yu’s cover is easily one of the best images ha has done in years, and the interior art is quite good too. Millarwold’s newest miniseries is everything you could ask for.
__________________________________________

The Secret Service # 1 - Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons

Gary is 17 years old. He hates living with his rundown mother and her brutish boyfriend. Poverty is never easy, and when you have no money, no goals, no ambitions, life is more of a punishment than anything else. Jack is Gary’s uncle, and he’s a man who is well aware of the despicable nature of Gary’s mother and her partner -a man who forces Gary’s younger brother to roll marijuana joints for him.

For Jack, it’s clear that the never ending circle of misery is the mother’s responsibility, but at the same time he feels tempted to give his nephew a helping hand. After all, as any other aloof and rebellious teen, the boy has already started defying the law. At first, Gary seems to view the world in black and white terms, a characteristic labeled as part-object position or whole-object by psychoanalytic theory.

For Gary, a person is good or bad: there is no in between. When his mother, or rather her nurturing breast, provides food (or in this case money to go watch a new 3D film) she’s good. Nevertheless, when he is not symbolically fed by the woman’s breast she is categorically bad. There is no gray area; no ambivalence. To be ambivalent is to view others as complex and multilayered. The same applies in his mind to his uncle Jack, he’ll be good insofar as he relieves him from jail after stealing a car with his mates (because, let’s face it, if your mom doesn’t give you money to go to the movies, what else can you do with your free time?).

I would argue that Gary is in a risky situation. First of all, he’s an underprivileged youngster used to a certain level of urban violence and misconduct; besides, he’s also an impressionable kid. Tough on the outside, but insecure on the inside. He clearly cares for his brother, but he despises his reality, his unwise mother that keeps accepting the worst kind of men as male companions.

So it would be safe to assume that there’s a noticeable correlation between adolescence and delinquency. Gary’s part-object tendencies force him to split the world in two halves, forgetting the possibility of ambivalence. For some theoreticians, the origin of delinquency would include several factors: powerless-omnipotence (Gary feels absolutely powerless at home, but he’s omnipotent as he drives a stolen car, encouraged by his teenage friends), magical thinking (the “make a wish” syndrome), restricted range of affect (envy towards his rich and successful uncle Jack and rage towards the man usurping the place of his father), hostility, ruthlessness, and destruction (all of which can be found in Gary’s behavior). So Gary has the necessary conditions to spend the rest of his life committing petty crimes and getting quickly arrested for it. Unless, that is, Jack can convince him to become a spy for the British Crown.

Dave Gibbons shares with us the bleakness of a small house crowded with people, the uncertainty in Gary’s movements, the mother’s anguish, the uncle’s sophistication. Dave also creates a great opening with full-fledged action sequences (in which we see the death of actor Mark Hammill, famous for his role as Luke Skywalker in the original “Star Wars” movies). Instead of the graphic sophistication we could find in Watchmen, Dave decides to go for a more down-to-Earth approach in these pages, which suits the urban reality of the story just fine.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

America’s Got Powers # 1 - Jonathan Ross & Bryan Hitch

Tommy Watts is a 17 year-old scruffy kid that is about to lose his job due to his tardiness. What’s so peculiar about it? Well, for starters, his job consists on selling toys and memorabilia from America’s Got Powers, the world’s largest TV reality show with an audience of five billion people. And what’s the show about? It’s the Roman circus adapted and recycled for a postmodern world. Indeed, super-powered youngsters fight against each other until there is only one winner left.
wraparound cover / portada doble

This could be the world we live in except for one minor change: when an iridescent crystal hit San Francisco, all pregnant women within a five miles radius gave birth at the same time. The result: an entire generation of powered boys and girls; in some of them, the level of power is impressive, in others is insignificant, although they have all been blessed -or cursed- with abilities that no human being ever had before.

What’s the reaction of the people? Of the world? Of humanity at large? Mindless entertainment of course. The kids are raised in special camps and their only way out is to fight against their own mates, while they’re televised and scrutinized by billions. Their lives are at stake, but the men behind America’s Got Powers have decided to make things even more dangerous for them.
the gay capital of the world / la capital gay del mundo

Jonathan Ross had already proved he could write good comic books with Turf, but here good becomes great. The way Ross gives us enough background information in only a handful of pages surpasses the abilities of most mainstream writers that can’t seem to tell a compelling story in one issue. And we can easily relate to Tommy, an unkempt teen with a big heart but nothing big going on in his life.

Is he bored with his job? Certainly, he’s not having the time of his life selling trinkets to customers obsessed with the heroes of America’s Got Powers. Psychoanalysts often explain that if a teenager has the capacity to tolerate boredom he can also have an adequate impulse control, while the unhealthy aspects of boredom imply an unconscious desire for excessive nurturance.

Tommy is probably bored out of his mind with his day-to-day life. But he also has a firm control over his impulses, some might think that’s easy as he’s a “zero”. Zero meaning he’s the only kid in this generation of superpeople that has zero powers. On the contrary, Quarterback, the world’s most famous teen hero, has an unquenchable thirst for fame, for recognition, and what is all that if not a way of expressing his desire to be nurtured by a symbolic mother personified by countless hordes of raving fans?
100% action / acción al 100%

Ratings shouldn’t be more than an arithmetic measure, but most of the time ratings become like a drug for famous people. This can be understood as an untoward wish to be cared for by the more powerful other. Here, nonetheless, pathological boredom acts as a passive-regressive buffer against the fear of abandonment. Because, after all, these boys and girls are abandoned, estranged from their parents, isolated from ‘normal’ people.

Adolescence serves as a template for later life. Evidently, teenage years are crucial. And in “America’s Got Powers” crucial has an even more urgent tone. In a way, that’s what Tommy Watts discovers once he loses control over his impulses… as he unleashes a never-before-seen energy signature, his life will never be the same, but one thing is for sure, boredom will never again be an option.

Of course, it would be impossible for us to get bored with Bryan Hitch on board. And he does such an amazing work in these pages. Bryan is well-known for his extremely detailed pages; he definitely has a knack for arranging a multitude of people in the same panel without ever losing the true direction of the characters’ actions. In “America’s Got Powers”, he reminds us why he’s one of the best British artists in the industry. He has made a huge effort with every panel, and that becomes obvious watching the amount of different angles he uses or the arrangement of the frames. Other artists could go the easy way and display only the most necessary visual elements and with the same kind of angles everyone uses (including me), but Bryan refuses to do so. His heart and mind are clearly in this, and it shows. All that extra effort in creating larger-than-life fighting sequences, in showing us not just the protagonist walking into a crowded room but the whole building with dozens of men and women interacting, the energy and movement of the characters, the costumes design, everything comes together and stands above and beyond other comic books. This has definitely been one of the best first issues I’ve read in a while. Congratulations to Jonathan and Bryan! These British guys seem to have already overpowered America.

Tommy Watts

the reality show begins / el reality empieza

Tommy is now a superstar / ahora Tommy es una súper estrella

¡Felicitaciones a Jonathan y Bryan!

In previous months I had barely a dozen of new comics and lots of free time to read them, now I have over twenty plus one very nice hardcover and a trade paperback. Lots of things to read and no time at all to do so. Luckily, that’s what weekends are for. The first thing I read was America’s Got Powers # 1 which I loved so much that will be reviewed here shortly. Secret Service, The Shadow and Fanboys versus Zombies were also very good. I’ll probably talk more about these titles in upcoming posts. Meanwhile, I leave you with April comic books as per solicitations.

La semana del arte de Lima

Eban and Charley (2000)
 Directed by James Bolton

Although at first glance one might consider this a gay romance spiced with the controversy of age difference, James Bolton's film is mainly a reinterpretation of parental issues that pertain to any gay or straight dynamic.

Eban is a 29 year old man, unemployed, uncertain of his future and with no other choice but to live with his parents. Parents who not so delicately ask him to respect his curfew, to go to bed early, etc. Charley is just a 15 year old kid who has a somewhat precarious relationship with his father. As soon as they meet, one could reason that they must first resolve their parental issues before trying to consolidate their passionate relationship.

The characters, however, are not entirely aware of the importance of fatherly figures in their lives. That's up for the viewer to discern and interpret, a task that is much easier in Bolton's recent film "Dream Boy".
Marcelo Peirano

Both characters are longing for freedom. But in order to reach freedom a sacrifice must be made. It has been discussed in psychoanalytic theory the importance of independency. Every young man, at some point in his life, craves for freedom. In many cases getting a job can secure financial independency and thus leaving home for good becomes a real possibility. But there is no such thing as being free as the wind. A new shackle replaces the old one. The young man must thrive at the cost of his own hard work, money after all doesn't grow in trees. He is free from his parents but he's now in a new type of confinement. How he deals and resolves this apparent paradox will help him to achieve adulthood.

Sacrifice can also be understood as leaving something behind. Something deemed precious or essential. That is why traditional psychoanalytic theory associates sacrifice with castration. It's all about leaving something behind. In some cases, in some cultures, this takes upon a most literal meaning: what is circumcision after all? Isn't it a symbolic castration? Isn't it leaving something behind, leaving part of the penis behind, the same penis that Freud appointed as phallus? Lacan however renounces this Freudian interpretation. For Lacan castration is never a negative process, it's the only way in which the individual can be successfully inserted in the symbolic order. If castration does not take place then the individual turns psychotic. Castration for Lacan means to enter into the symbolic order, and that means to enter into language. Human language is the required castration before any individual can become a part of society.
Jorge Piqueras

Nonetheless, what can be said about sacrifice and castration regarding Eban and Charley? Well, there are at least two things I feel confident enough to explain. "Laws are stupid" says Charley when confronted with the possibility of Eban being accused of pedophilia. Laws are stupid. Laws are castrating indeed. When Charley says "I don't think age should matter if you love someone" he inadvertently relies on an Aristotelian conception of the Supreme Good. According to Aristotle, to obey the law means to feel good (doing the right thing makes you feel good); this a Greek paradigm that Socrates upholds even when it means his own demise (in Plato's dialog about the laws Socrates explains why he must face the death penalty instead of running away, because to obey the law is the only way to preserve the polis, and thus to reinforce the Greek culture). Kant, on the other hand, affirms that obeying the law is painful and it must be so. To obey the law, according to Kant, means to experience a narcissistic diminishment. By obeying the law I understand that I'm just one man, that I'm not the center of the universe, that there are things I must obey although I don't agree with them.

Of course, we no longer live in Classic Greece. We live in a post-Kantian world. Now the only alternative is to follow Charley's reasoning: age shouldn't be a concern because it's no longer required to support a law which neither of them can respect. What fascinates me about Bolton's film is how he handles pedophilia, probably one of the most controversial subjects, and how he turns this relationship into a metaphor of sacrifice, castrating parents and conceptions of Aristotelian and Kantian law.

my drawing / mi dibujo
